Introduction of Heat-Precipitation Index: A New Look at High-to-Late Medieval via Climate Records and Major Historical Events

As a new way of looking into the Middle Ages, and especially the Little Ice Age, this paper demonstrates a new index aiming to take both temperature and precipitation variation into account and also into presentation, and to create a universal, adaptive, flexible index. Through the lens of this index it becomes especially significant, for example, that the Great Famine in early 14th century was not mainly driven by a significant drop in temperature, but rather by the long-term accumulation of excessive rainfall, overlapped by various socio-political conditions in favor of such a chaos. Although this index is only an initiative of such tools, it calls upon the researchers to look at history not displaced, severed from the current time, but to measure the ancient time with the same tools we use today, to look at history as we do to our very own time.

Okavango Delta Surface Water Level Change Visualization

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a major river delta area in southern Africa that is characterised by seasonal rainfall and highly variable surface water levels. This delta, home to both numerous wildlife communities and human resident communities, presents among the best and potentially last examples of human communities constantly adapting to the wildlife elements and changing water surfaces. Furthermore, much still remains to be known about the spatio-temporal patterns of water level variations in the delta, and how such water level change is going to be affected by the climate change. This animation visualizes water level change in the delta since 2000 to 2016, using water level data from Okavango Research Institute. The data, however, is not sufficient to perform any interpolation upon the delta area, and the point symbols only represent water level recorded by each station.

A GIS Analysis of India’s Water Supply Dilemma: Case Study of Allahabad

It all started with an article on Foreign Policy, with a simple idea of make it easier and safer for residents in regions of India where water mafia prevailed... And continue to prevail. Allahabad, a city having firm access to two major rivers in India, is stuck by water shortage never expected before, and the situation may only get worse.

Captured: Winnipeg Crime Density Mapping Project

Winnipeg, Manitoba, one of the worst crime-ridden cities in Canada. I was totally shock when I browsed through the crime data from the local police department and found that in just three and half months from January, 2015 to mid April, more than 1,800 crimes, most violent ones, happened inside the boundaries of this captial city of Manitoba. What's more, one of my best friends is studying at that city, alone. To make this map I was driven by nothing but the believe that something can be done to help the residents, especially non-local students, to make their lives safer.
